Wink Commanders Guide || Anleitung zum Commander sein

Deutsche Version siehe unten || German version see below:

Commanders Guide

Since PR 0.8 most people are thinking that being commander is a boring job and a waste of time. From the point of view of a person who intended to play a first person shooter they might be right. Because although PR isn't a strategy game at all, being a commander will mean to play one.

And it will be one of hardest strategy games one can buy on todays markets, because you will have to deal with small amounts of resources, achieve your goals in the shortest time and have to motivate and handle the most impatient and most dangerous species on earth: human players.

After taking a seat in the Command Post forget about that there's outside a first person shooter running. You have your map, your radio and your knowledge about the terrain and the abilities of your forces and that of your opponent.

Your first task will be to negotiate about tactics with your squadleaders or bend your tactical ideas into direction of the squadleaders preferences. Negotiating skills would not be amiss.

From the very first keep an eye on constant reconnaissance and reports about the enemy, to achieve information about the intention of your opponent. Make sure that your squadleaders keep a picture about the whole tactical situation.

Divide your forces into reconnaissance/advance guard, attack and defence and keep a small amount of reserves every time for an extreme case. Coordinate your air-transport and combat-air-support and encourage your tanks to drive back to the command post early to repair. Plan the locations where your infantry should build up firebases and bunkers.

Try to use the incoming reports to guess the intention of your opponent and change your tactics whenever necessary. Be aware that often the moves of the enemy seems to be unreasonable because your information about his forces are fragmentary.

Try to motivate your squads and keep very calm, when there are critical developments. Allow your squadleaders time to execute your orders and try to direct their preferences onto the right track. Use the key “B” often to talk to single squads without disturbing the others. Set the icons on the map sparingly and delete it after use.

Isn't a squad following orders intentionally, then make yourself clear about the reason. Maybe this squadleader will be more useful on another task. If not, then feel free to abuse him extensive and inform the others about the traitor.

If you should loose the battle, then stay in your position till to the bitter end and grant yourself a coffee, tea, Red Bull, ice-coffee, beer or hard liquor. Because at this point it is as Caesar said before: alia iacta est,... the dice have been thrown.

Thanks for the guide. I might try commanding more often. I have been SL under so few good commanders. They usually are either silent and absent from the fight, or too chatty and pissed off at everyone for not following every order within 30 seconds. Appropriate is your advice to give SLs time to execute commands. Commanders are usually just as impatient as typical players and lack negotiation and persuasion skills.

brilliant guide, is there one for a squad leader because if there is nooby squad leaders will know what to do if he has to lead a full squad because a recon squad is small and the objective to to kill\spot as many NME's as possible and stay alive no real squad tactics needed so an SL guid would be great for em.

Nice work

Great post. Simply great. It captures the essence of commanding in PR. Though I find it hard to keep calm at all occations

I implemented the guide while commanding the US team on Opperation Archer on Tactics & Teamwork server.
- And it worked!

I organized my team into:
a 1x firesupport sq, 2x assault squads, 1x transport squad, 1x reserve squad, 1x Recce
squad.

At a certain point the intire team save the recce squad was waiting 5 minutes at the main base. Since I knew the other team would bunch up around the caches even though they were unrevealed, I had the recce sq cruising around in a hummwv.
When they took heavy fire from the village in the south eastern cornor of the map,

I send 3 squads their way in 3 minutes via huey deployment.

At that point we allready knew there was an enemy hideout constructed at the big hill in te center of the map. So when 2 caches were revealed at that mountain I JDAM'ed the place and the reserve sq singlehandedly took out 3 caches. The firesup. sq and assault sqs obliterated the village and took out two caches and 2 hideouts. (!)
Epic

Commanding is so awesome an experience when you have a team that coorperates 100%.
