Herbiie
Default Herbiie's Commander Guide.

Hey Guys,

After a round on RT I've decided to go commander as much as I can now, so I'll slowly be putting together a thorough guide here.

I'll split it into Sections:

Position:

In v0.9 as a CO you have alot more freedom as to where you go.

In my eyes you still shouldn't be fighting on the front line, but you should be near enough to it to see what's happening.

From my experience there are two places you can go when out on the field, depending on the tempo of the battle. If you're team is being very aggressive, and you are actively Commanding a Multi-Squad Flag Attack, then you should be in a position where you can watch your guys go in, but are not involved in the fighting. This will help you co-ordinate your team. If you're team is on the back foot, or it's an equally balanced fight in terms of aggressiveness, then the best place for you is at a flag with a purple shield on it, you'll be close enough to the fighting to see what's going on, but far enough away to be safe, and, of course, if the flag come sunder heavy attack you can help out.

In either of these positions you should be in a concealed position, and should preferably have two planned out, one where you can see easily, and another where the enemy will have to be right on-top of you to find you. You should stay in the first position until you want to use your map for any length of time, for e.g. co-ordinating a big assault, air support, or Area Attack. When you wish to do this, you should fall back into the concealed position, so there's no chance of you getting sniped with your map out.

Can a commander recon from a helicopter driving around the action?

unless the server rule is that you have to sit in your ACV sure why not.

though wen teh UAV is avaliable, I suggest you use that instead - safer and easier anyway.

though being the 2nd seater in teh gazelle or Little bird on kashan for example is a perfect way to use the scout chopper to the fullest, just fly high altitude over your armoured units and you can guide them in on their targets.

Some maps the UAV isnt really useful, due to view distance and the UAV being rather high.

I tried this last night on Ramiel in the Blackhawk but after a few passes over the city decided to give up my seat in case anyone needed it. I had a good pilot (Gforcemember45 I think) and he would have told me of any important stuff like technicals or hideouts anyway.

It seemed I was helping more when I was in the UAV spotting caches or co-ordinating transport for squads, but if the opportunity to ride along is there and the pilot doesn't care, I say go for it.

When I play as a commander, I'd rather be near the squads. In this way, I know where the team is most vulnerable, and this helps me adjust the positions of squads and FOB's.

Commander of the PR can not just use the UAV for reconnaissance and remain at the base convincing the leaders to follow his orders from a distance, because there are maps equal to the "Assault on Grozny" that does not have UAV. Recalling that the insurgent commander also does not use the UAV.

Playing as an insurgent commander is the best way to learn how to play as a frontline commander.

I wish the commander had the same system of sending orders looking at the target, just like the squad leader. This video below simulates this:

That would help me a lot. Maybe the R-DEV's implement something similar in the next version?
