most huymvees arent armored, also artnez is correct in saying one grenade would put a humvee out of action, either by wreaking the engine or incapacitating the crew.

The M203 uses a low velocity HE 40mm grenade. The high explosive round can penetrate 2 inches of armorplate, 16 inches of concrete blocks, or 20 inches of sandbags at ranges up to 1,312 feet (400 meters).

The GP-30 uses a similar 40mm grenade except that it is a fragmentation grenade, which makes it more deadly to infantry. It also has a really cool variant has a fuse and set off when the grenade bounces.. so it explodes in the air.

Anyway, a 40mm grenade is more than enough to make an HMMV out of service. Even if it's heavily armored, it's still a standard car with armor -- thus it has plenty of weak spots to go for.

This is incorrect, these stats refer to the penetration power of the 40mm HEDP (High Explosive Dual-Purpose) round, which utilizes a shaped charge for increased penetration at the expense of having minimal fragmentation.

The M406 Low-Velocity HE rounds which are the most commonly used have very poor penetration performance

but they should still take out a humvee or at least hurt the crew enough to take the thing out of action right?

not likely, considering humvees have been blown up by anti-vehicle mines purpose built for destroying vehicles (and with a hell of a lot more explosive than a puny little 40mm) and failed to kill the crew inside.

I'm sorry, but the 40mm are not the weapon most people seem to think they are.
