microphone issues

hey guys.
recently my microphone has just stopped working. i've checked all my hardware and tried changing the sound settings via the little symbol in the task bar. iv googled this problem and cannot find any solutions.
anyone have any ideas?
i think its a software problem, i just have no clue what to do

i'm running windows xp home edition, nvidia 8600gt 512mg, 250 gig hard drive
any help would be appreciated as this is ruining PR for me

make sure the mic is not muted if it has a mute switch. Check your recording options in your sound options and make sure the mic is not muted or on low volume.

already have. but to no avail

Alt + tab out during game.
Try to switch from game mode to entertainment mode in the creative control panel.
It won't.
Alt + Tab back in.
Mic is fixed.
If you do not have X-FI. . .
mute and unmute the mic in Windows sound panel. or unmute mute it.
