That happened to me once - I just assumed it was because I renamed BF2.exe TO BF2A.exe to get a performance increase (it worked) - so I changed it back and the problem never returned.

The only shortcut I know of is reinstalling the full 1.4 patch (no need to do anything else like reinstall pr, etc). But that won't fix all the errors, since it is only a patch and not a full install.
