Default PR:V - NVA Tactics

Since PR:V has released we have seen some bush to bush fights and a lot of close range actions in the forests of Vietnam. So that is the reason that I make this topic. A few tactics that you could use to get your advantage in these fire-fights as member of the NVA.

Weapons and gear
First of all what are your strong-points. The weapons you have are all suited for CQB and will outgun almost every weapon the US will have, except the M60. So what you need to do is get close to your enemy and draw them into crossfires. Use the grenades you have as an advantage. Throw them while you lay prone in the bushes and you will make them paranoid. Try to draw their fire and strike back, since their magazine capacity has been decreased by 10 rounds, the time that they are combat ineffective has increased over the same time period compared to the fights in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bushes and growth
Everyone knows it, nature is hell for the US troops. Use the bushes to sneak up on them and retreat fast. When your squad has been decimated, hide and wait for the moment to strike back from behind. You can also use these bushes to hide FOBs, rally points, vehicles and things like supplies. Since they have air superiority, you need to hide everything for their pilots and gunners.

Infiltrate, flank and psychological warfare
Not do they only have air superiority, they also have massive fire-power in the form of napalm, artillery, bombs and CAS. Because these weapons can be very effective in stopping your attack, you should get the close as you can get to the enemy. And if possible, get between them. Why? Because they will get paranoid, disorientated and when they call in these support weapons, they will not only fuck you up, you will also cause them to fire on their own units. A good example is the clip in the movie Platoon, where their whole perimeter is infiltrated by NVA forces. You can get between them by using the growth or by flanking them. What is the effect of it? As said before they will become paranoid and even better, they will get demoralized. If you get shot for the third time within your own perimeter, they will think better next time and their actions will slow down.

These tactics can be used to your advantage G.I.!

If you have tactics please post time in a clear way.

We are staying up!

The basics of good ambush tactics is as always taking advantage of the terrain, using all the cover and concealment. Second is to get as close as possible before firing. If you can avoid shooting until you're right on top of them preempt an ambush with a few frags. Always flank, get behind that M60.

Another thing to try is to find likely avenues of approach and then set up to ambush the Americans. I had a lot of success with a squad of 6 friends on Ia Drang ambushing from the American side of the dry river and setting up with the machine gun looking down the length of it at the bend near the Cutoff Platoon flag.

When things go loud move around a lot. With this much ground cover there's no reason to take one position and just attract attention with sustained fire.

Look for helos coming down and try and get them in the LZ, or at least start tracking them and wait for the right moment to blow them out of the water. Don't shoot up at them cause that'll just ruin a perfectly good LZ ambush.

Avoid firing piecemeal. A good SL should control his squad's fires so that you all fire at once and overwhelm the enemy as fast as possible.

Always follow up initial fire with an assault. The longer you engage in indecisive firing the more likely you'll get napalm vectored onto your patriotic asses.

When all else fails role play being a crazy NVA soldier and pop some smoke and just charge through with your AK set to rock and roll.

I may spend more time REDFOR than every before thanks to PR:V

Ultimately good discipline will always make for a better ambush squad.

what I noticed in Tad Sae before PR:V, that can also be used in PR:V is that foxholes make a good position in the jungle.
Jungle foxholes have these advantages:
- better view (over the grass and bushes)
- it is harder for the enemy to run you over in a tard rush through bushes
- good cover from the nade spam, hail of bullets, and mortars
- clear separation between friend and foe (minimizing the chance of friendly fire)
Build couple of them on a ridge, and you are in far better position than the enemy.

With foxholes, average squad can hold a certain position in the jungle.
